Police Officer Attacked With Machete In East London

A police officer was stabbed with a machete in a «frenzied» attack as he tried to stop a van in Leyton, east London.

The officer, aged in his 30s, suffered multiple injuries but managed to use his Taser on the suspect. His colleague then stepped in to arrest the man following the stabbing, shortly after midnight. Police said the injured officer was expected to recover from his injuries.

Det Ch Supt Richard Tucker, of the Met, said he was stabbed «in the head and round the body» and was being treated at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel. He described the attack as «frenzied, unprovoked and shocking».

The uniformed officers had attempted to stop the van for having no insurance on the junction between Coopers Lane and Leyton High Road. When they spoke to the driver he became «quite aggressive» then returned to his van before «a violent struggle ensued», Det Ch Supt Tucker said.

The injured PC is a patrol officer who has been with the Met for about 10 years.

Russian Ammunition Store In Flames

At least eight people including service personnel were injured in the blasts near the town of Achinsk. Three of the injured were being treated in hospital.

The depot reportedly contained tens of thousands of artillery shells.

Witnesses posted videos of balls of flame and black smoke, starting during the day and continuing after dark. A state of emergency was declared in the area, west of the city of Krasnoyarsk.

Children at a nearby summer camp were taken to safety while soldiers at the base took refuge in bomb shelters. About 3,000 people were moved, but Achinsk town officials told Tass news agency that 11,000 more residents were being prepared for evacuation. The cause of the blast was not immediately clear.

Krasnoyarsk region is one of those affected by huge wildfires that engulfed parts of Siberia in recent weeks, due to unusually hot weather and strong winds. The worst of the fires, however, were many miles away to the northeast.

The Achinsk ammunition store is one of the oldest in the Russian armed forces’ ordnance network and was due to be dismantled by 2022, Tass quoted the defence ministry as saying.

Seven Arrested After Tube Train Fight

Seven men have been arrested after a large fight, which is thought to have involved football fans, broke out on a Tube train in central London.

The brawl took place while the train was at Great Portland Street Station at 14:00 BST on Sunday. The men were all held on suspicion of violent disorder and remain in custody, British Transport Police (BTP) said.

Supporters of Manchester City and Liverpool, who were playing at Wembley, were in the station at the time. The two clubs met in the Community Shield match at 15:00 with Manchester City winning on penalties.

Metropolitan Line trains, which serve Wembley Stadium, travel through Great Portland Street. The BTP said no injuries were reported.

Man Sentenced For Stabbing Police Dog

A man who stabbed a police dog in the head in a «gratuitous» attack while high on drugs has become the first person to be jailed under Finn’s Law.

Daniel O’Sullivan, 29, admitted attacking Audi as his handler tried to make an arrest in Stoke-on-Trent. O’Sullivan, of Liverpool, was the first person charged under the Animal Welfare (Service Animals) Act 2019.

Judge Paul Glenn said the attack on 1 July was «plainly premeditated» and jailed O’Sullivan for 21 months.

O’Sullivan, from the Litherland area, also admitted five counts of assaulting police officers and two of possessing offensive weapons. A member of the public called police after being concerned about O’Sullivan’s behaviour near the Potteries shopping centre in Quadrant Road, Hanley town centre, at about 14:15 BST.

Howard Searle, prosecuting, said he was seen «bouncing up and down, punching the air with the knife, making practice lunges».
