Embassy Attack In Kabul Leaves Two Dead

Afghan security forces battled gunmen following a suicide attack outside the Iraqi embassy in the capital, Kabul.

A bomber blew himself up at the embassy’s gate, then three other attackers entered the compound, the Afghan interior ministry said.

Two Afghan embassy employees were killed, and three people, including a police officer, were injured, a spokesperson said.

So-called Islamic State (IS) said it carried out the attack.

After a gunfight lasting several hours, Afghan authorities said the attack was over and all the assailants had been killed. The embassy is located in the central Shar-e-Naw neighbourhood. Kabul has seen a number of deadly assaults this year blamed on either IS or the Taliban.

Russian Government Tells Poland Not To Remove World War Two Monuments

The Russian government has warned Poland that it will face sanctions if it removes monuments glorifying the Soviet victory in World War Two.

Last month Poland updated its «de-communisation» legislation, banning «totalitarian» symbols, which would include Soviet propaganda monuments.

Now Russian foreign ministry officials have warned of «asymmetric measures» if Poland removes Soviet war monuments.

Russia could refuse visas for Polish officials or downgrade trade relations. The officials, quoted by the Russian daily Izvestia, were not named.

The Red Army’s defeat of Nazi German forces on Polish soil in 1944-1945 remains a thorny issue in Russian-Polish relations.

Disturbance At HMP The Mount

Riot-trained prison staff were sent to a jail amid reports of violence on two wings.

Sources earlier said that one wing of HMP The Mount in Hertfordshire and half of another wing had been «lost».

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) later said the incident was «resolved» and no staff or prisoners had been injured. A report into the jail published earlier highlighted staffing problems and said violence was an issue.

The Mount, in Bovingdon village near Hemel Hempstead, opened in 1987 and is classed as a category C male prison.

A «tornado team» made up of riot-trained staff arrived at the jail at about 18:30, equipped with shields and batons while fire, police and ambulance crews were on standby outside. The MoJ said officers had dealt with an «incident involving a number of prisoners».
