Shots Fired Outside Birmingham School

A primary school was put on «lockdown» after shots were fired outside and a man ran into the building for shelter.
The two shots were fired from a car at the man, who was on a bicycle outside St Edmund’s RC Primary School and Nursery in Springhill, Birmingham, said West Midlands Police.

The man later fled, said police.

A member of staff’s car was damaged but no-one was injured. Police were at the school on Thursday to reassure staff and parents. «It is not believed that the school or any of the children or staff were the target of the attack. «We are still searching for the victim, who is also thought not to have been injured, and the offender who made off in the vehicle,» police said.

A police officer is in hospital recovering after he was stabbed in the back and neck at an airport in Michigan, police say.

A suspect is in custody after Wednesday morning’s attack at Bishop International Airport in Flint.

The FBI, which is leading the investigation, said it cannot rule out terrorism as a motive.

The attacker cried «Allahu Akbar» («God is greatest»), witnesses and sources at the airport were quoted as saying. «We are aware of reports that the attacker made statements immediately prior to or while attacking the officer,» the FBI said in a statement. «But it is too early to determine the nature of these alleged statements or whether or not this was an act of terrorism.»

Syrian Military Jet Shot Down By US Coalition

Russia has warned the US-led coalition fighting in Syria that it will view its aircraft as targets, after a Syrian military plane was shot down.

The coalition said it had shot down the Syrian SU-22 after it bombed US-backed rebels in Raqqa province on Sunday.

Russia, Syria’s main ally, said it was also halting communication with the US aimed at preventing air incidents.

Syria condemned America’s «flagrant attack», saying it would have «dangerous repercussions». «Any aircraft, including planes and drones belonging to the international coalition operating west of the Euphrates river, will be tracked by Russian anti-aircraft forces in the sky and on the ground and treated as targets,» the Russian defence ministry said. It denied the US had used a communications channel before the SU-22 fighter bomber was downed.
