Annual WW2 Victory Parade Takes Place In Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised the sacrifices of the Soviet people in World War Two, addressing the armed forces in Moscow.

The giant, annual Victory Day parade for the first time included missiles adapted for Arctic warfare.

Russia is developing new Arctic bases. «No force will be able to dominate our people,» Mr Putin said, deploring the havoc that Nazi Germany wreaked in the war. The USSR lost more than 20 million people — more than any other country.

The Soviet Union (USSR) ceased to exist in 1991.

Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko took part in a wreath-laying ceremony in Kiev. He told Ukrainian soldiers that Russia was trying to use the victory anniversary «to satisfy its own revanchist, imperialist and expansionist needs». «The Kremlin is still trying to command Ukraine as if it commanded the four Ukrainian fronts in the 1940s.»

Russia has often been accused of downplaying the role of other nations in the defeat of Nazi Germany.

Head Of IS In Afghanistan Killed In Military Strike

The head of so-called Islamic State (IS) in Afghanistan, Abdul Hasib, has been killed in a military raid, US and Afghan officials have said.

He died 10 days ago in an joint special forces operation in eastern Nangarhar province, the US military said.

Hasib is believed to have been behind March’s attack on a military hospital in Kabul, killing at least 50 people. Last month, the Pentagon said Hasib had probably been killed in a raid by US and Afghan special forces.

Two US army rangers also died in the raid, near an underground system of tunnels believed to be used by IS which were targeted by the largest conventional bomb ever used by the US. There has been no confirmation of the death by IS.

Abdul Hasib was appointed as the leader of IS in Afghanistan last year after his predecessor was killed in a US drone strike. He is credited with masterminding the Kabul hospital attack, although some Afghan security experts questioned whether a group still thought to be relatively small in Afghanistan could be capable of planning and carrying out such a large scale operation.

Swiss Spy Worked Inside German Government Office

German investigators suspect that a mole spied for Swiss intelligence from inside a government office which was trying to catch German tax dodgers.

The allegations are part of the case against an alleged Swiss spy arrested in a Frankfurt hotel on Friday, German media report. He is suspected of monitoring German tax investigators.

Switzerland objects to the practice of buying data stolen from Swiss banks.

The mole allegedly spied inside North Rhine-Westphalia’s finance ministry.

Investigators suspect that the mole — not yet identified — gave the Swiss spy the names of tax investigators, and that the Swiss Federal Intelligence Service (FIS) ran the operation.

Since 2010 North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Germany’s most populous state, has paid whistleblowers millions of euros for data CDs revealing secret Swiss bank accounts. They are trying to recover millions of euros hidden by German tax dodgers.

Security Forces In Mogadishu Kill Government Minister By Mistake

Somalia’s security forces have shot dead a 31-year-old government minister after mistaking him for a militant Islamist, officials have said.

He was killed in his vehicle near the presidential palace in the capital, Mogadishu, the officials added.

The president has cut short his visit to Ethiopia following Abdullahi Sheikh Abas’ killing, state radio reports.

He grew up in a refugee camp, and became Somalia’s youngest MP in November and a minister in February.

Somalia has been wracked by conflict since the long-serving ruler Siad Barre was outed in 1991. It is currently battling militant Islamists from the al-Shabab group, which is affiliated to al-Qaeda.

Security forces on patrol came across a vehicle blocking the road and, thinking it was being driven by militants, opened fire, police Major Nur Hussein told Reuters news agency.
