800 UK Troops Arrive In Estonia To Strengthen Nato Defences

The first of 800 UK troops being sent to bolster Nato defences in the Baltic have arrived in Estonia.

The 120 soldiers from the 5th Battalion The Rifles will set up a UK headquarters in the country before the remaining troops arrive in April. The defence secretary said they would deter «Russian aggression».

The UK is taking a leading role in Nato’s «enhanced forward presence» operation, aimed at reinforcing the alliance’s eastern border.

Tensions between Estonia and Russia increased as a result of the Ukraine conflict, which resulted in the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014. Commander of the battalion Lt Col Mark Wilson said the British force would «integrate into the Estonian defence force, and bolster their capabilities».

He added that it was important for the UK to show solidarity with its Nato allies.

More Details Released On Orly Airport Attacker

Blood tests have revealed that a gunman who attacked soldiers at Orly airport in Paris on Saturday had consumed drugs and alcohol.

Ziyed Ben Belgacem, 39, was killed after he put a gun to a soldier’s head saying he wanted to «die by Allah».

Paris prosecutors’ office said toxicology tests during his autopsy found traces of cocaine and cannabis.

Belgacem also had an alcohol level of 0.93g per litre of blood, nearly twice the legal limit for driving in France. He is said to have been radicalised in prison, and was on a police watch-list. He was involved in a shooting and then a carjacking on Saturday before he attacked a military patrol at Orly, Paris’s second-biggest airport. Belgacem’s criminal record included convictions for armed robbery and drugs offences, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins told reporters late on Saturday.

Shooting At French School

A shooting at a school in the southern French town of Grasse has injured at least two people, police sources say, with a report suggesting it was an incident between two students.

One person was arrested but another suspect is on the run, a police source said.

Anti-terrorist commandos from the elite Raid force were sent to the scene, French news channel BFMTV reports. The government sent out a warning of a terrorist attack via its mobile app.

Grasse, the capital of France’s perfume industry, is about 44km (27 miles) from the city of Nice, where a lorry attack in July killed 86 people.

France remains under a state of emergency after a string of deadly attacks in the past 18 months.

Letter Bomb Sent To IMF Injures Employee

A letter bomb has exploded at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) office in Paris, injuring the employee who opened it, police say.

The IMF employee received hand and face injuries, and staff were evacuated.

IMF director Christine Lagarde condemned the «cowardly act of violence» against IMF staff.

In another development, the German finance ministry in Berlin intercepted a parcel bomb sent to Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble on Wednesday.

A Greek far-left group, the Conspiracy of Fire Cells, said on a website that it had sent the German device.

Ms Lagarde said in a statement that the IMF was working closely with the French authorities to investigate the letter blast.

Yahoo User Account Data Breached

Two Russian spies are being indicted by the US Department of Justice over the theft of Yahoo user accounts, according to the Washington Post.

Previously, Yahoo said «state-sponsored» hackers were behind a 2014 breach affecting 500 million accounts. It was not immediately clear whether the charges, expected to be announced by the Justice Department later today, related to this breach.

Yahoo was criticised for the delay in informing users about the 2014 breach.

The stolen data included names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth and encrypted passwords, but not credit card data, according to Yahoo.

Last year, users were advised to change their passwords.

Around eight million UK accounts were believed to have been affected — including some users of BT and Sky email services.
