Anti-Government Protests In Romania Grow

The Romanian capital, Bucharest, has seen one of its largest ever anti-government protests after a decree was passed that could free dozens of officials jailed for corruption.

A crowd of at least 150,000 was reported outside government offices late on Wednesday and rallies took place in other towns and cities.

As the protesters dispersed, a group of football supporters threw firecrackers at police who responded with tear gas.
The decree was passed late on Tuesday.

The leftist government, led by Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), only returned to power in December after protests forced its last leader from power in October 2015. The new government says the decree is needed to ease overcrowding in prisons but Mr Grindeanu’s critics say he is trying to release allies convicted of corruption.

The unfolding crisis prompted a cabinet minister to resign on Thursday.

British Soldier Killed Himself To Avoid Being Captured By IS

A Briton fighting in Syria «turned the gun on himself» to avoid being taken prisoner by so-called Islamic State, Kurdish have said.

Ryan Lock, 20, from Chichester in West Sussex, died on 21 December during a battle for the IS group’s stronghold of Raqqa. He was fighting as a volunteer with the Kurdish armed fighting forces, the YPG.

The YPG said that «trace of a gunshot wound was found under the chin», suggesting suicide.

Sources said five fighters came under siege by IS — also known as ISIS — in the village of Ja’bar, and they showed «considerable resistance» before they were killed.

After the bodies were retrieved examinations showed that «it seems that the British fighter committed suicide in order not to fall captive with Isis». A report said the gunshot wound indicated «that the gun made contact with the bottom of the chin». «This suggests that the fighter committed suicide,» it concluded.

Multiple Raids Take Place In Germany Arresting 16 Jihadist Suspects

A 36-year-old Tunisian man suspected of recruiting for jihadist group Islamic State has been detained in multiple raids in Germany.

He was one of 16 people arrested across the central state of Hesse, as 1,100 police searched flats, businesses and mosques. The man is also wanted by Tunisian authorities over a jihadist attack on the Bardo Museum in Tunis.

Twenty-one tourists and a Tunisian were killed in March 2015. Many of the victims were British, Japanese, French, Italian or Colombian.

Authorities in Frankfurt said Wednesday’s operation was the result of a four-month investigation. They had evidence Islamists were preparing an attack, but described the planning as in its early stages.

Those arrested are aged between 16 and 46 and are suspected of helping a foreign terrorist group and of planning serious violence.
