Offshore Helicopter Flights Issue New Rules For Larger Workers

New rules are to be introduced on the size of oil workers travelling to and from offshore installations by helicopter.

Passengers with a shoulder width of 22 inches or more will be classed as «extra broad» and will have to sit next to a similarly large helicopter window.

It follows a Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) review of helicopter safety.

Concerns were raised about larger passengers being able to escape from a crashed aircraft quickly.

The changes come after a study revealed the average oil worker had risen in weight by close to 20% over the past 30 years.

There were concerns that size had become a risk factor in helicopter accidents, with larger workers finding it harder to leave helicopters during emergencies due to the size of the exits.

Fresh Air Strike On Islamic State BY RAF Tornados

RAF jets have launched a fresh air strike against Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq, the Ministry of Defence has said.

It said two Tornados used precision-guided bombs to attack IS fighters at a fortified building near Ramadi, west of the capital Baghdad, overnight.

IS forces inside the building were firing on Iraqi soldiers, the MoD said.

Meanwhile, ex-head of the armed forces, General Lord Richards, said air strikes alone may not be enough to defeat IS.

«Ultimately you have to seize and hold ground yourself to deny them the ability to operate — and only an army, or armies can do that,» he told BBC Radio 4’s The World at One programme.

Harry Street Detained Over Bomb And Weapons

A killer who shot five people dead in 1978 has been told he might never be released from a secure hospital after «an arsenal» of weapons was found at his home last year.

Ex-Broadmoor patient Harry Street, 70, admitted making an improvised explosive device as well as 50 homemade bullets.

He was caught with the bomb and three handguns at his Birmingham home.

At the city’s crown court Mr Justice Blair sentenced Street to indefinite detention under the Mental Health Act.

He told Street, who entered guilty pleas ahead of his trial, it was necessary for the protection of the public he be subject to special restrictions which mean he may never be released.

West Midlands Police has started a serious case review but said there had been no trace of Street on its database. He was released in the mid-1990s.

In 1978 Street, then called Barry Williams, shot three neighbours and a couple who ran a filling station.

He admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and was detained under mental health laws.

Canada To Join Air Strikes On Anti-Islamic State

Canada plans to join the US-led campaign of air strikes against Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq, its government has said.

A motion authorising the mission is expected to pass on Monday in the House of Commons.

The six-month mission will include CF-18 fighter jets and refuelling and surveillance aircraft, but not ground troops.

PM Stephen Harper said it was intended to «significantly degrade» IS.

Canada has more than two dozen military advisers already in Iraq.

The US has undertaken its own air strike campaign in Iraq for several weeks and in Syria for almost two weeks.
