Iraq violence escalates as cafe car bomb kills 11

In a village just north of Baghdad, a car bomb killed three police officers and wounded nine others.

In the south of the capital, a roadside bomb hit a vehicle carrying Sahwa militiamen fighting al-Qaeda, killing two and injuring two others. Another blast targeted an army patrol killing one Iraqi soldier and wounding two others, reports said.

Bangladesh court orders Abdul Kader Mullah to be hanged

A war crimes court in Bangladesh has ordered prison authorities to hang an Islamist leader, months after he was sentenced to death.

Abdul Kader Mullah of the Jamaat-e-Islami party was found guilty of crimes against humanity during Bangladesh’s independence war in 1971.

He could now be hanged at any time unless President Abdul Hamid or the Supreme Court intervenes.

Jamaat-e-Islami has called for a national strike on Monday in protest.

The special court has been trying Bangladeshis accused of collaborating with Pakistani forces and committing atrocities in 1971.

However, human rights groups say the war crimes tribunal falls short of international standards.

There are concerns that the execution of Mullah could trigger a fresh wave of violence across the country.

Malian fugitive Cheibani recaptured by French troops

A Malian man who escaped from prison in Niger where he was serving a sentence for killing four Saudi tourists, and allegedly assassinated a US diplomat has been recaptured, officials say.

French soldiers arrested Alhassane Ould Mohamed, also known as “Cheibani”, in northern Mali on Tuesday.

He was among 22 prisoners who escaped from jail in June during an attack by suspected Islamist militants.

Following the mass breakout, the US unsealed an indictment for his arrest.

It said he was wanted for the murder of US diplomat William Bultemeier who was shot in Niger’s capital, Niamey, as he left a restaurant with colleagues in December 2000.

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has rejected protesters’ demands that she step down, amid fresh clashes in Bangkok.

Ms Yingluck said the demands were not possible under the constitution, but that she remained open to talks.

More clashes broke out on Monday as protesters tried to storm the prime minister’s office, Government House.

Four people have died in Thailand’s worst political turmoil since the 2010 rallies that ended in violence.

“Anything I can do to make people happy, I am willing to do… but as prime minister, what I can do must be under the constitution,” Ms Yingluck said in a televised address.
