Egypt attack on Suez Canal ship

Egyptian officials say they have foiled an attack on a container ship which was aimed at disrupting shipping in the busy Suez Canal.

Canal authority head Mohab Mamish said a “terrorist element” targeted a Panama-flagged vessel on Saturday, but it was undamaged.

There were reports of two blasts, but details of the attack are unclear.

Egypt’s Sinai has been hit by a wave of violence since Islamist President Mohammed Morsi was ousted from power.

The unconfirmed reports said there were two explosions at 12:30 GMT on Saturday as the ship, Cosco Asia, passed through the waterway.

“The situation was dealt with strictly by the armed forces,” Adm Mamish said in a statement.

Brazil and Mexico probe claims US spied on presidents

Brazil and Mexico have both demanded an explanation from the US over claims that the National Security Agency (NSA) spied on their presidents.

Internet data from Brazilian leader Dilma Rousseff and Mexico’s Enrique Pena Nieto was intercepted, journalist Glenn Greenwald told Brazil’s TV Globo.

Mr Greenwald obtained secret files from US whistle-blower Edward Snowden.

Brazil said data interception would represent an unacceptable violation of sovereignty. Mexico called for a probe.

“You cannot allow… a US agency, or someone that has been hired by the US government, to follow what any Brazilian citizen is doing,” Brazilian Senator Eduardo Suplicy told the BBC’s Newshour programme.

Both the Brazilian and Mexican governments summoned their respective US ambassadors. Mexico requested an “an exhaustive investigation” to determine who may be responsible for the alleged spying on Mr Pena Nieto’s emails before his election last year, the AFP news agency reported.

London’s £3 BILLION embassy sell-off bonanza

A sell-off of central London embassies will create £3 billion of super-prime homes in the most exclusive streets in the capital.

Twenty diplomatic missions and residences have been prepared for sale in the last six months. More are in the pipeline as foreign governments realise they are “sitting on a gold mine”.

Almost all the diplomatic properties are being earmarked for conversion into apartments to meet the demand from wealthy buyers, mainly foreign, in areas such as Kensington, Belgravia and Holland Park. The former European Council of Foreign Relations building on Old Queen Street near St James’s Park was sold this week to developer Galliard Homes for £21.5 million.The eight-story building will continue to house the ECFR until 2015 but will then be converted into 35 apartments that could be worth £100million.

Galliard sales director David Galman said: “These diplomatic buildings were built to impress so they tend to have grand facades, opulent foyers and spacious interiors which are ideal for conversion into large luxurious homes.”
