South Korean Official Shot Dead By North Korea

A South Korean official has been shot dead and burned by North Korean troops, the South’s defence ministry said, condemning the “brutal act”.

Seoul said the man, who worked for the fisheries department, disappeared from a patrol boat near the border and was later found in the North’s waters.

North Korean soldiers shot him, then poured oil over his body and set it alight, the ministry said. It believed it was an anti-coronavirus measure. Pyongyang has not commented.

The border between the Koreas is tightly policed, and the North is thought to have a “shoot-to-kill” policy in place to prevent Covid-19 from entering the country. The incident would be the second time North Korean troops have shot and killed a South Korean civilian. In July 2008, a tourist was shot by a soldier at Mount Kumgang.

Eiffel Tower Evacuated After Bomb Threat

The Eiffel Tower has been evacuated after a bomb threat.

Police cordoned off the Parisian landmark around midday Wednesday after an anonymous phone call was made claiming explosives had been left there.

Armed officers could be seen at a cordon set up on nearby roads, while French media reported that explosives teams were searching the site. Roads leading to the landmark, in Paris’s 7th arrondissement, have been closed while people are being told to avoid the area.

Videos posted on social media showed police cars at the foot of the tower, with one poster tweeting: ‘Perimeter of Tour Eiffel cordoned off, police operation in progress.’

Trump Ricin Package Suspect Appears In Court

A Canadian woman has been charged in US federal court for allegedly posting a letter with deadly ricin poison to President Donald Trump.

Pascale Ferrier, of Quebec, was arrested at a border crossing in Buffalo, New York, on Sunday. Officials say she was carrying a gun. She has pleaded not guilty to making threats against the president.

The letter she allegedly sent last week was discovered before it reached the White House. In it, she called on Mr Trump to drop out of the US presidential race. The envelop contained ricin, a poison found naturally in castor beans. “I found a new name for you: ‘The Ugly Tyrant Clown’,” she wrote in the letter to Mr Trump, according to FBI charging documents filed ahead of her first court appearance in New York on Tuesday. “I hope you like it. You ruin USA and lead them to disaster. I have US cousins, then I don’t want the next 4 years with you as president. Give up and remove your application for this election.”

British Bank Moved Money That Could Have Links To Terror Activities

A British bank moved money that may have been linked to terrorist financing, leaked documents show.

Standard Chartered Bank processed almost $12m (£9.4m) in payments for Jordan’s Arab Bank from 2014 to 2016. In 2016, Standard Chartered filed a report alerting authorities to more than 900 transactions that it suspected might have been for “illicit activities under the guise of charity”.

The report raised concerns about “possible terrorist financing”. The payments were reviewed after a US jury in 2014 found Arab Bank had knowingly provided banking services to the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the early 2000s.

Police Investigate Triple Shooting In Coventry

Three men have been shot in what police described as an act of “outrageous violence”.

Two of the victims suffered serious injuries in the attack on Far Gosford Street, Coventry, at about 22:15 GMT on Thursday. They were taken to hospital along with a third man, who had more minor injuries.

West Midlands Police said it wanted to hear from anyone who saw a dark-coloured vehicle leaving the scene.

The road has been cordoned off for a forensic examination.

“This was outrageous violence on the streets of the city centre and we’re doing everything we can to bring those responsible to justice,” Supt Paul Minor said. “We’ll be stepping up patrols in the area over the coming days.”
