IS Leader Dead

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the jihadist group Islamic State (IS) and arguably the world’s most wanted man, killed himself during a raid by US commandos in north-western Syria, President Donald Trump has said.

The self-styled “Caliph Ibrahim” had a $25m (£19m) bounty on his head and had been pursued by the US and its allies since the rise of IS five years ago.

At its peak, IS controlled 88,000 sq km (34,000 sq miles) of territory stretching from western Syria to eastern Iraq, imposed its brutal rule on almost eight million people, and generated billions of dollars in revenue from oil, extortion and kidnapping. But despite the demise of its physical caliphate and its leader, IS remains a battle-hardened and well-disciplined force whose enduring defeat is not assured.

Eight Russian Soldiers Killed By Colleague

A Russian serviceman has shot dead eight fellow soldiers and seriously injured two more on a military base in the country’s Far East, officials say.

Private Ramil Shamsutdinov – who has been detained – might have been suffering from mental health problems, they say. The shooting happened in the military unit No. 54160 in the village of Gorny, not far from the city of Chita, on Friday evening.

The shooting happened at 18:15 local time (11:15 GMT), Russia’s Investigative Committee said.

The defence ministry earlier said that shots were fired during a change of guard at the base in the Transbaikal region. Mr Shamsutdinov, a conscript, killed two officers and six fellow soldiers.

Russian media report that the suspect was targeting his victims in the head.

Russian Troops Deployed Towards Turkey/Syria Border

Russian forces have begun to deploy towards the Turkey-Syria border, as part of deal to remove Kurdish troops.

Units have already entered the two key border towns of Kobane and Manbij. Under the deal agreed by Russia and Turkey, Kurdish fighters were given 150 hours from noon on Wednesday to pull back 30km (18 miles) along the border.

Turkish troops will continue to control an area they took during a recent offensive against the Kurdish fighters, regarded by Turkey as terrorists. Part of Turkey’s plan is also to create a “safe zone” along the border that will house some two million of the Syrian refugees it hosts.

The Turkish offensive began after the US announced a sudden and unexpected withdrawal of its troops from northern Syria. The US troops had been supporting the Kurdish fighters, who have been allies in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) group in the region.

US President Donald Trump tweeted on Wednesday that the situation in the border area had been a “big success”, and said he would speak in detail later.

Lorry Driver Arrested After 39 Bodies Found In Container

The bodies of 39 people have been found in a lorry container in Essex.

Police were called by the ambulance service shortly before 01:40 BST after the discovery at Waterglade Industrial Park in Eastern Avenue, Grays.

The lorry driver, a 25-year-old man from Northern Ireland, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Essex Police said the vehicle travelled from Bulgaria and entered the UK via Holyhead, Anglesey, on Saturday. Early indications are that 38 adults and one teenager have died, the force said. There were no survivors.

Deputy Chief Constable Pippa Mills said identifying the victims “remains our number one priority”. She appealed for anyone with information about the route the lorry may have taken, or anyone who had seen the vehicle or knew about its journey, to get in touch.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was “appalled by this tragic incident”. He said: “I am receiving regular updates and the Home Office will work closely with Essex Police as we establish exactly what has happened. My thoughts are with all those who lost their lives and their loved ones.”

Norway Ambulance Hijacker Charged

A man has been charged with attempted murder after a stolen ambulance crashed into a family in the Norwegian capital Oslo, injuring three people – including twin babies.

Public broadcaster NRK showed images of the ambulance driving through the city as gunshots were apparently fired from inside the vehicle.

The alleged hijacker sustained gunshot wounds after police returned fire. A woman has been charged with illegal possession of a firearm.

A motive for the attack has yet to be established although police are investigating possible links with far-right extremists.

Police say a man stole the ambulance on Tuesday afternoon and drove it at pedestrians in the capital. “We have taken control of an ambulance that was stolen by an armed man,” Oslo police said on Twitter. “Shots were fired to arrest the suspect, he is not seriously injured,” they added. “A woman with a pram and an elderly couple were run over or had to throw themselves out of the way” of the stolen vehicle, police said in another Twitter post.

An Oslo University hospital spokesman told the Reuters news agency that seven-month-old twins were injured.
