China has condemned violence clashes in the Hong Kong protests as «behaviour that is close to terrorism» – in a sign of its rhetoric hardening.

After days of peaceful protests at Hong Kong International Airport, clashes with police broke out on Tuesday night. Video showed an officer drawing his gun on protesters who beat him with his own truncheon during the disturbance.

It is the second time in a week that Chinese officials have publicly likened the protests to terrorist activity.

Some observers believe that the repeated use of such language suggests that China is losing patience with the protesters, and could increase the likelihood of an intervention from Beijing. However, most analysts consider that at this stage, a direct military intervention is still unlikely.

The former British colony has a special status, with its own legal system and judiciary, and rights and freedoms not seen in mainland China. However, many activists believe this is now under threat.

An armed man has been arrested after stabbing a woman in central Sydney and being detained on the street by members of the public.

A second woman was found dead inside an apartment building on the same street.

«All the information we have at hand would link these two crimes,» police commissioner Mick Fuller said at a press conference. He said the suspect was a «lone actor» with a history of mental health issues. He was known to police but «his history was unremarkable compared to the gravity of the crimes he committed», Mr Fuller said.The police commissioner said the suspect had some ideologies related to terrorism, but had no apparent links to other terrorist organisations.

It is believed the man had a USB drive containing details of mass killings in New Zealand and the United States.

Mr Fuller said the stabbing is not currently being classed as a terrorist incident but this would be reassessed as the investigation continues.

Three «heroes» were praised by New South Wales Police Minister David Elliot for their role in detaining the man and acting «well and truly beyond the call of any citizen». He also congratulated the firefighters involved.

The incident unfolded at about 14:00 local time (04:00 GMT) on Tuesday near Clarence St and King St, a busy area in the city centre. Video footage shows the suspect jumping on a car wielding a knife, shouting «Allahu Akbar» and «shoot me», as another man confronts him with a wicker chair.

A 21-year-old Norwegian man has appeared in court in Oslo, accused of terrorism in connection with a gun attack on a mosque at the weekend.

His face and neck marked by bruises and scratches, Philip Manshaus was also charged with attempted murder, as well as the murder of his stepsister. Prosecutors are seeking to extend his custody for another four weeks. He appeared to smile at photographers before the judge opened the case behind closed doors.

Mr Manshaus is accused of opening fire at the Al-Noor Islamic Centre in Baerum, west of the capital Oslo, on Saturday.

Shortly after the attack, the body of his 17-year-old stepsister was found at a house in Baerum.

A man is in custody after a stabbing and robbery spree that left four people dead and two injured across several crime scenes in Southern California.

Police told US media the violence appeared to be random, with the only known motives for the two-hour rampage as «robbery, hate, homicide». «We know this guy was full of anger and he harmed a lot of people,» said Garden Grove Police Lt Carl Whitney.

Authorities have not yet named the suspect, a 33-year-old male.

The attacks come just days after the country was shaken by a pair of mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, that left 31 people dead. The stabbing spree took place across more than six locations over approximately two hours in Garden Grove and neighbouring Santa Ana, about 35 miles (56km) southeast of Los Angeles.

The suspect was armed with «two very large machete-type knives», Lt Whitney said at a news conference following the attacks. «He was very brutal when he attacked his victims.»

Mexican police have found the bodies of nine people hanging from a bridge and seven more corpses hacked up and dumped on the road.

The massacre in the city of Uruapan in the western Michoacán state is thought to be gang-related, prosecutors say.

A banner hanging from the bridge reportedly bore the initials of one of Mexico’s most powerful drug cartels.

Criminals have previously hung the bodies of their murdered victims in public to intimidate rival gangs. «There is a turf war between the [local] cells of different criminal groups,» state prosecutor Adrian López told reporters at a news conference on Thursday.

Mr López said the gangs, which he did not name, are «fighting for territorial control over the production, distribution and consumption of drugs». The banner on the bridge bore the initials of the Jalisco New Generation gang and a reference to a rival cartel, the Viagras, the Associated Press has reported.
