Las Vegas Police Trying To Establish Gunman’s Motive

Police are working to establish the motive behind a mass shooting which left at least 59 dead and another 527 injured at a Las Vegas concert.

Gunman Stephen Paddock, 64, opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel towards an open-air music festival on Sunday evening.

Police found 23 guns in his hotel room, as well as «in excess of» 19 firearms and explosives at his Nevada home. But as yet, no clear reason for the killing has emerged.

Investigators have found no link to international terrorism, despite a claim from so-called Islamic State. Some investigators have suggested psychological issues, but there is no confirmation of this. The shooter was not known to police.

President Donald Trump described the attack as «pure evil» in an address from the White House on Monday.

Stephen Paddock lived in a community of senior citizens in the small town of Mesquite, north-east of Las Vegas. He reportedly lived with a woman called Marilou Danley who is out of the country in Japan, and does not appear to be involved, police said.

Las Vegas Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said when police searched the property after the attack they found 19 «additional firearms, some explosives and several thousand rounds of ammo, along with some electronic devices we’re evaluating at this point».

Public Anger At Police Spark Protests In Catalonia

Protesters are blocking major roads in Catalonia and there is little public transport because of a general strike.

Catalan trade unions called the strike to show public anger at Spanish police violence that marred the region’s independence referendum on Sunday.

At least 24 protesters’ roadblocks were reported across Catalonia, causing big traffic jams. Barcelona port was at a standstill, union sources said. However, the city’s El Prat airport and its taxis are operating normally.

Many small businesses across Catalonia have shut for the day. Schools, universities and medical services are also closed or operating at a minimum level. The strike was called in protest at «the grave violation of rights and freedoms» seen during Sunday’s ballot. Almost 900 people were hurt as Spanish police tried to prevent voting, in a referendum declared illegal by the Madrid government.

Some police officers were seen firing rubber bullets, storming into polling stations and pulling women by their hair. Thirty-three police officers were also injured in Sunday’s clashes, Catalan medical officials said.

However, more than 2.2m people reportedly voted in spite of this. The Catalan government says the vote in support of independence was nearly 90%, but official results have not yet been released.

Two Stabbed To Death On Marseille Train By Suspected Jihadist

A suspected jihadist who stabbed two young women to death at Marseille’s main train station had used several aliases and was a known petty criminal, French police and officials say.
A soldier shot and killed the attacker after the stabbings on Sunday. The victims were cousins from Lyon, both aged 20.

The knifeman had been detained in Lyon on Friday on suspicion of shoplifting, but then released for lack of evidence. He struck just outside the station. The man was said to be of North African appearance, but his identity remains unclear.

A police source quoted by Le Parisien newspaper said «he had the profile of a petty criminal, and in order to deport him it would be necessary to identify him, and that did not take place». Witnesses said he shouted «Allahu akbar» (God is greatest) during the attack, by a bench outside the southern city’s Saint Charles station.
