Policeman Seriously Injured In South Yorkshire

A police officer is in hospital after being seriously injured in an attack in Doncaster.

South Yorkshire Police said they were called to reports of a vehicle crash on Cleveland Street at about 07:30 BST.

The officer was assaulted when three people fled the area, running towards Cherry Tree Lane.

The full extent of his injuries is not yet known, the force said. Two men and a woman have been arrested and are in custody.

Det Ch Insp Martin Tate said: “Officers have attended this morning to try and detain someone for a criminal offence. “Unfortunately as part of that, and we don’t know the full circumstances, an officer has been seriously injured and assaulted.
“We don’t know the full extent of the injuries but [I am appealing] for people to give us information on what happened.”

M1 Closed After Discovery Of Suspicious Object

The M1 remains closed in both directions after a “suspicious object” was found underneath a bridge.

Motorists have been stranded for hours on the 11 mile (18km) stretch between junctions 15 at Northampton and 14 at Milton Keynes.

A bomb disposal unit was earlier seen travelling along the hard shoulder towards the scene. The Ministry of Defence confirmed it had provided police with “explosive ordnance device assistance”.

Highways England has posted diversions but it is unclear when the road will reopen.

Trapped northbound traffic is being cleared by funnelling motorists through Newport Pagnell services. National Express has added 45 minutes to travel times for services that use the motorway.

Acid Attack In France On US Tourists

Two US tourists have had hydrochloric acid thrown in their faces at Marseille train station, French media say.

The victims, both in their early 20s, received treatment in hospital, but were released later in Sunday.

Two other members of their group were also attacked at Saint-Charles station, but did not get acid in their faces.

The incident is not believed to be terror-related. The attacker, described by police as a mentally unstable 41-year-old woman, has been arrested. The report says she remained at the site after the attack, and showed photographs of herself with burns.

The group are Boston College students who are on a year in Europe, the college said in a statement. “It appears that the students are fine, considering the circumstances, though they may require additional treatment for burns,” it said.

Acid attacks around the world:

In Britain the problem has become so acute there have been calls for parliament to act. One such attack was caught on camera in London last month

In Berlin at the beginning of this year there was a series of acid attacks on women

A former Miss Italy finalist has also been attacked

Acid attacks have also been reported in the US, most recently in Arizona

In South Asia acid attacks have been commonplace for many years – with one case on Wednesday involving two men in India who allegedly gang-raped a woman and then later attacked her with acid

Police Still Questioning Parsons Green Bomb Suspects

Police are continuing to question two men on suspicion of terror offences following Friday’s attack on a Tube train in south-west London.

It comes as CCTV images emerged showing a man carrying a Lidl supermarket bag 90 minutes before the bombing.

An 18-year-old and 21-year-old are being held over the explosion, which injured 30 at Parsons Green station.

The UK terror threat level has been lowered to severe after being raised to critical, its highest level.

On Saturday, the 21-year-old, believed to be Yahyah Farroukh, was arrested in Hounslow, west London, and the 18-year-old was detained at Dover port. Local council leader Ian Harvey said he understood the 18-year-old was an Iraqi orphan who moved to the UK when he was 15 after his parents died.

Two Men Arrested In Connection With Parsons Green Bombing

A second man has been arrested in connection with Friday’s attack on a London Tube train, police said.

The 21-year-old man was arrested in Hounslow, west London, on Saturday night on suspicion of a terror offence and is in custody in south London.

An 18-year-old man is also being held on suspicion of a terror offence over the Parsons Green explosion.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd said that the second arrest suggests the attacker was not “a lone wolf”.

Speaking to the Andrew Marr Show, Ms Rudd said there was “no evidence” to suggest so-called Islamic State were behind the attack. “But as this unfolds and as we do our investigations, we will make sure we find out how he was radicalised if we can,” she said.

The UK terror threat level remains ‘critical’, meaning an attack is expected ‘imminently’.
