German Talking Doll Easily Hacked Reports Federal Network Agency

An official watchdog in Germany has told parents to destroy a talking doll called Cayla because its smart technology can reveal personal data.

The warning was issued by the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur), which oversees telecommunications.

Researchers say hackers can use an insecure bluetooth device embedded in the toy to listen and talk to the child playing with it. Manufacturer Genesis Toys has not yet commented on the German warning.

The Vivid Toy group, which distributes My Friend Cayla, has previously said that examples of hacking were isolated and carried out by specialists. However, it said the company would take the information on board as it was able to upgrade the app used with the doll. But experts have warned that the problem has not been fixed.

The Cayla doll can respond to a user’s question by accessing the internet. For example, if a child asks the doll «what is a little horse called?» the doll can reply «it’s called a foal».

Air Raid In Yemen Kills Mourners At A Funeral Reception

Eight women and a child have reportedly been killed in an overnight air raid on a funeral reception near Yemen’s rebel-held capital, Sanaa.

At least 10 more women were wounded, medical sources said.

A Houthi rebel spokesman said the strike was followed by a second which hit emergency responders in Arhab, 40km (25 miles) from Sanaa.

The rebels blamed a US and Saudi-backed coalition for the bloodshed, who are yet to comment. The coalition has been fighting the Houthis and forces loyal to a former Yemeni president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, since March 2015. Its aim is to restore the internationally recognised government of President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.

Abdel-Rahman al-Ahnomi, a spokesman for the Houthis, said the twin strikes killed and wounded dozens of people. However, other reports from the scene said there was only one air strike. Conflicting reports are common in the chaos following air raids in Yemen.

University Evacuated After Student Mistakenly Makes Explosive

University buildings were evacuated when a student accidentally made the same highly explosive substance that was used in the Paris terror attacks.

An investigation by Bristol University has found that triacetone triperoxide (TATP) was «unintentionally formed during a routine procedure».

A cordon was set up around the university’s chemistry block during the incident earlier this month. No-one was injured and a controlled explosion was carried out.

TATP was used in bomb vests worn by militants in the Paris attacks and later found by Belgian police following attacks in Brussels.

Bristol University said: «We have robust contingency plans in place to deal with incidents of this nature. «As soon as the presence of TATP was identified the student immediately notified those responsible for laboratory safety in the school. «A series of actions were then taken which resulted in the precautionary evacuation of the chemistry building and surrounding buildings and the controlled disposal of the substance by the emergency services.»

The university said it was reviewing its procedures to «determine whether additional checks» could be carried out before similar work.
