China says it is conducting military exercises near the Taiwan Strait to « protect its sovereignty » even as a top US official visits Taiwan.

The live-fire drills come amid rising tensions between Beijing and Washington, and as the US moves to shore up its support of the island. China regards self-ruled Taiwan as a breakaway province.

Keith Krach is the highest-level official from the US State Department to visit the island in decades.

On Friday, China’s defence ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang accused the US and Taiwan of « stepping up collusion, frequently causing disturbances », although he did not make any reference to the visit.

Twenty-nine German police officers have been suspended for sharing pictures of Adolf Hitler and depictions of refugees in gas chambers on their phones.

The officers also used far-right chatrooms where swastikas and other Nazi symbols were shared, officials in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) said. NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul said it was a « disgrace for NRW police ». It follows several other incidences of far-right extremism among the German security services.

More than 200 police officers were involved in raids on 34 police stations and private homes linked to 11 main suspects. The officers are said to have shared more than 100 neo-Nazi images in WhatsApp groups.

Some of the suspects face charges of spreading Nazi propaganda and hate speech. Others are accused of not reporting their colleagues’ actions.

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after being shot with a crossbow on a street in west London.

The 33-year-old was found seriously hurt after emergency services were called to Pield Heath Road, Hillingdon, at about 20:00 BST on Monday.

The Met Police said he had suffered an abdominal injury which had been caused by a crossbow arrow and his condition is being treated as life-threatening.

No arrests have been made and cordons remain in place.

An Australian policeman has been suspended over the arrest of a man who was allegedly hit by a police car and then kicked in the head by an officer.

The man, 32, was put in an induced coma and admitted to intensive care after the arrest in Melbourne on Sunday. His family has called for an independent investigation, after footage of the incident went viral. Victoria Police said an internal unit was investigating.

Melbourne has been under a strict coronavirus lockdown for the past two months.

Police have been given unprecedented powers, under public health orders, to fine and detain people, but it does not appear that Sunday’s arrest was related to a lockdown breach.
The man had been at a hospital seeking treatment for mental health issues when he left, prompting staff to call the police. A video of the arrest taken by a bystander shows a policeman appearing to stomp on the man’s head before officers pin him to the ground. Victoria Police said the man had been behaving erratically and assaulted an officer.

Two Los Angeles police officers are recovering in hospital after being shot in what police are calling an ambush.

Video of the incident shows a figure approach the officers’ vehicle, before opening fire and running away. Los Angeles Sheriff Alex Villanueva called the act « cowardly ». The suspect remains at large.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has announced a $100,000 (£78,000) reward for any information leading to the gunman’s arrest.

Almost 40 US police officers were killed in the line of duty in 2020, FBI statistics show – eight of them were victims of an ambush.

Protesters shouted anti-police slogans and blocked the entrance to the emergency room where the two officers were being treated, police and witnesses said.
