Low turnout marks bid to end political crisis in Libya

Voting has ended in a Libyan general election marred by low turnout and deadly violence.

The election is seen as a last chance to end the anarchy that has gripped the country since the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi.

Officials said about 630,000 people voted, fewer than half of those eligible.

At least five people died in clashes between government forces and militants in the eastern city of Benghazi.

Security officials said Islamist insurgents had opened fire on a local security headquarters. At least another 30 people were wounded, they added.

Libyan rebels enter deal to reopen two oil terminals

Two Libyan oil terminals have reopened, after rebels agreed partially to lift their oil blockade in a deal reached with the government.

The terminals of Zueitina and Hariga in the east are now in government hands, the justice minister has said.

Two other ports are due to reopen in the coming weeks.

Oil exports have plummeted 80% in the past eight months after the closures of oil ports led by militiamen seeking greater regional autonomy.

Traders have been watching the negotiations closely, keen to know when Libyan oil is going to re-enter the market after major disruption.

Navy Seals board rogue Libyan oil tanker Morning Glory

The US has taken control of a tanker full of oil loaded from a rebel-held port in Libya, the Pentagon says.

The raid by Navy Seals took place in international waters south of Cyprus, said spokesman Rear Adm John Kirby.

The Morning Glory’s evasion of a naval blockade at the eastern port of Sidra prompted Libya’s parliament to sack Prime Minister Ali Zeidan last week.

In a separate incident on Monday, an attack on an army base in the city of Benghazi killed several soldiers.

A bomb went off as people were leaving a graduation ceremony for officers, police said.

Benghazi army base hit by deadly attack

A car bomb at a military academy has left at least eight soldiers dead in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, medical sources say.

The attack targeted soldiers leaving a graduation ceremony. More than a dozen people were reported to be wounded.

A second car bomb later exploded elsewhere in Benghazi, killing one person.

Benghazi was the cradle of the 2011 uprising that toppled the 42-year rule of Muammar Gaddafi.

But since then it has been a focal point for attacks on public institutions and officials.

The government called the academy bombing a “terrorist act” and declared three days of mourning.

No group has said it carried out the bombing but Libyan security forces have long been battling Islamist militants in the city.

The death toll is unclear. Local officials initially said nine people had been killed. A hospital spokesman later said three bodies had been found.
