Charges After Fuel Thrown At Police Officers

Three people have been charged after police officers were doused with petrol during an arrest.

Officers were called to Ward Close in Basildon to reports of a stolen motorbike at about 16:30 BST on Sunday.

Justin Jackson, 28, of Ward Close, is charged with seven counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Janine Justin, 47, also of Ward Close, and a 17-year-old boy also from Basildon, who cannot be named, have also been charged.

Two officers had to be taken to hospital for treatment after petrol got in their eyes. Others has to be washed down at the address, though no long-term harm is expected.

The boy is charged with dangerous driving, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, driving without insurance, theft of a motor vehicle and two counts of handling stolen goods. Both the boy and Mr Jackson will appear at Basildon Magistrates’ Court later, while Janine Justin, who was charged with possession of an offensive weapon, will appear on 30 May.

A 17-year-old girl from Corringham, a 20-year-old woman from Basildon and a 30-year-old man from Basildon were also arrested at the scene but have all been released under investigation.

German Far Right Extremists Prone To Violence

Some 12,700 Germans are inclined towards violence, of an estimated 24,000 far-right extremists, according to interior ministry figures.

Authorities had already warned of a growing threat of violence from the extreme right, including an “affinity for weapons”, the ministry said.

Hundreds of flag-waving extremists caused alarm this week when they marched through an eastern town.

Germany’s main Jewish organisation said the march should not have been allowed. The marchers carried a banner that read “social justice instead of criminal foreigners”. They carried flares and banged drums through the centre of Plauen, a town in Saxony whose synagogue was burnt down by the Nazis in November 1938.

The Saxony march took place on Wednesday, on the eve of Jewish remembrance of the Holocaust. Leaders of the left-wing Linke party in Saxony said they were appalled that “uniformed Nazis were allowed to march with torches and drums”.

National Security Council Leak, Not A Police Matter

The government does not think it necessary to refer the National Security Council leak to the police, the PM’s de facto deputy says.

Responding to calls from MPs for a police inquiry, David Lidington said the PM considered the matter closed. He said Gavin Williamson – who has been sacked as defence secretary – had not been accused of a criminal offence, but had lost the PM’s confidence.

Mr Williamson strenuously denies being the source of the leak. He was sacked following an inquiry into the leak, which led to reports in the Daily Telegraph on plans to allow Chinese company Huawei to help build the UK’s 5G network.

Opposition MPs have said there should be an investigation into whether the Official Secrets Act had been breached. But Mr Lidington, responding to an urgent question from Labour deputy Tom Watson, said it was not considered necessary to refer it to the police. Ministers would, however, “co-operate fully should the police themselves consider an investigation necessary”.

Mr Lidington said it “boils down to what is set out in the ministerial code” and so the prime minister was “the ultimate judge of the standards of behaviour expected of a minister”. He said ministers should “shut up” after National Security Council and cabinet meetings, appearing to echo Mr Williamson’s words when he told Russia to “go away and shut up” soon into his job as defence secretary.

Masood Azhar Named As A Terrorist By UN

The UN has designated the leader of a militant group behind a deadly bomb attack that brought India and Pakistan to the brink of war as a terrorist.

Masood Azhar is the leader of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), which carried out a suicide bombing in February killing 40 troops in Indian-administered Kashmir.

The UN move comes after China dropped its objection to the listing. India hailed it as a diplomatic victory. Masood Azhar will be subject to an assets freeze and a travel ban.

“Big, small, all join together. Masood Azhar designated as a terrorist in @UN Sanctions list. Grateful to all for their support,” Syed Akbaruddin, India’s ambassador to the United Nations, tweeted.

The Pakistani said it would immediately enforce the sanctions, but also took aim at India.

Man Pleads Guilty To Supplying Guns

A man has pleaded guilty to conspiring to sell or supply semi-automatic pistols that were being manufactured on a Sussex industrial estate.

Police discovered parts that could have been made into more than 100 guns.

Weapons from the factory were sold to London criminals and were linked to eight crime scenes including two attempted murders, the court was told.

Wood had denied a second charge of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and that will be left on file.

In October he admitted possessing a pistol and 24 rounds of ammunition after being “caught red-handed with a Browning 1922 pistol”, the jury heard.
